Project Management
Are projects often frowned upon in your organization?
IS YOUR ORGANIZATION RESISTANT TO CHANGE?
All too often, projects are started in an organization, but they fail to reach completion or fail to deliver the expected value. The relationship between the company’s leadership and the staff suffers in these circumstances, and the team becomes more and more resistant to change. Communication is affected.
According to the Project Management Institute, a well-recognized organization for international standards, projects most commonly fail because there is a lack of attention and effort being applied to 7 project performance factors:
1. FOCUS ON BUSINESS VALUE
Alignment between the project and the organizations key strategic business objectives. The project plan needs to cover the planned delivery, the business change required, and the means of realizing the benefits.
2. MEASURED RESULTS
The criteria by which the success of the project will be evaluated needs to be clearly defined before the project commences. While in nearly all projects there will be a degree of “learning what the requirements really are” throughout the duration of the project, scope creep, and it’s associated financial costs, should be avoided where possible.
3. QUALITY CHECKPOINTS
Routinely checking the validity of schedules, costs, quality, and other project-related factors can avoid the major contributors to both cost and schedule overruns.
4. METHODOLOGY
A detailed project plan including timelines, resources, and financial obligations must be developed before any release date of a project is announced.
5. BUY-IN
Successful projects occur when end users and the project sponsors work as teams – from the same location whenever possible. Projects are less likely to fail when stakeholders are well–informed and provide meaningful input during each phase of scoping the project and delivering it.
6. CHANGE MANAGEMENT
Managing and retaining the most highly–skilled and productive people is important when looking to improve on the current situation. Employing and helping your most skilled and knowledgeable team members to adopt and carry change forward.
BODY OF KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCES
The project team must be skilled and experienced. Clearly defined roles and responsibilities with access to past points of reference from previous projects can benefit those fulfilling the project roles today.
